8/9/10
Greetings from Nicaragua! Over a year ago, I noodlled around Buenos Aires for 2 months thinking that would be my only chance to live abroad again. And now, here I am again. Just goes to show, what the heck do I know about anything.
First Nica impressions:
1) Oh, hey, humid
2) Glad I didn’t bring my extra jacket
3) But my 6 scarves will come in handy
Nicaragua looks a lot like Costa Rica… green, lush, bright little casitas, dogs everywhere, horns honking. I got picked up at the airport with other peeps on the S22 crew. By peeps, I mean dudes. I was in a van with 12 dudes. The good news is that one of them was nice enough to pick up a 12 pack of Toña at the airport. So, with beer in hand, at 10am, we were on our way. Naturally, we had to make 2 more beer stops. Literally, all dudes. Some dude humor got awkward at times… for them, because I was in the car. For me, because it just wasn’t funny.
3 hours later, we get to our little San Juan de Sur town. It’s cute, a bit rundown, but charming. We pull into our living situation, and hellloooo villas! Wow! This was beyond anything I would have expected. I’m in a 2 bedroom house basically. Unreal. Also, I’m at the top of the hill, and I get some awesome views. Really thankful for this. Also, the place is called Palermo – like in Buenos Aires. Swoon. My view is the hammock pic up top. Unreal.
Before heading to lunch, me and my 3 other “Post” peeps have a beer. Because, why not. We open the door to the back patio area and squish a scorpion. Boom. Just like that. Now I’m petrified of being barefoot. Then we headed out to Iguanas. Apparently this is the place to BE in town. Reggaetone, waterfront, what have you. I had some fish tacos. And 2 more beers. Geez. Why not.
Afterwards, we head to basecamp! This is where all the offices are setup. It’s like a trailer city. Pretty cool. There is also a giant boat in the middle of it, and a pool. I also finally got to see Netttyyyyy! My dearest Annette, Goood Tiiiiimes. What a fun welcome.
Dinner time finally came! We went to the “really nice” place. For a drink and a delish steak meal, it was just $25. Pretty great! Also, some head honchos were dining there, and some other sort of diplomat/big important person. The town is so small, who could it be? Who needed a security outside the restaurant, and inside the restaurant (standing behind me). He even checked in the bathroom to make sure it was clear. Although, no one but me seemed to flinched when the stray cat was going nuts in the bathroom. Don’t ask. I don’t get it. We were all zonked, so we called it a night.
